Sun glasses basically provide protection to your eyes. Your eyes can be damaged from too much light, as well as too much of certain frequencies of light. The cornea and retina in the eye can be damaged.

So sun glasses provide protection from too much light, too much glare which is strong reflected light, and from certain frequencies such as UV light.

And yes, you are better off buying the more expensive good quality sunglasses. Cheap sunglasses can provide little or no protection for your eyes, although they may be better to look through than using none. So sorry, but you really do need to buy quality sun glasses, even if the cheap ones at the local flea market look just as good as the brand name quality sunglasses.
